Volunteers are Needed

There are four events coming up that need radio operators: Cranbury Park Tree Festival, Bloomin’ Metric Bike Ride, MS Bike Ride, and the American Legion Thank you to our Veterans Day.

Remember, we have to earn our right to get the airwaves the FCC gives us. Give back to the community and volunteer. Its fun and rewarding. Don’t be shy, we will put you in a role you are comfortable with.

The City of Norwalk gives us our space at 100 Fairfield ave. It is important to give back to the city!

Contact: Sam NV1P for the Tree Festival on 5/21 and the MS Bike Ride on 6/12.

Contact: Jon, WB2RYV for the Bloomin’ Metric on 5/22.

Contact George, AB1QK for the American Legion event on 6/4. Click here for more details about that event.

Email addresses are in the member directory.

GNARC Receives Appreciation Plaque from City

sam_george_tree_s

Tonight at their meeting,  the Norwalk Tree Advisory Committee presented the Greater Norwalk Amateur Radio Club with a very nice certificate of appreciation. As you all may know, the club has been providing logistical assistance to the Norwalk Tree Alliance in running their Tree Festival since 2013. The annual Tree Festival is a free event where more than 40 exhibitors give out botanical advice, seeds, face painting for the kids, rides in bucket trucks for kids (and kids at heart), and free food. Manythanks go out to those club members who helped pull the event off in previous years.

Our participation has also had a positive effect for the club. We are very visible to local government organizations, and our presence has not gone unnoticed over the past 3 years. Our continued participation in this event ensures that we remain to be noticed in such a positive light.

This year will be the 10th time the event will be held, and since event continues to become more popular each year more people show up. Last years attendance broke 2000, and they predict there will be even more this year. Please consider volunteering May 21st from about 10-2. Lunch will be provided, although for those who are picky you are welcome to bring your own.

Sam Dick – NV1P

GNARC Equipment Trailer

Our new trailer has arrived! More details to follow!

Winter Field Day a Huge Success!

On the last weekend in January, a few of your fellow club members participated in what turned out to be the most well attended Winter Field Day in the history of the club. On the radio side, despite the bands not cooperating 100%, we made 222 contacts over the 24 hour period. I would like to first thank the technical committee, because without all of their hard work installing and maintaining the station, none of the operation would have gone as smoothly as it did. Special thanks go to Mark, K8ZW, for making more than half of those contacts. Special thanks also go out to George, AB1QK, who operated the overnight shift. In total, we had 9 operators, which for a Winter Field Day is a great turnout.

What was really awesome was the total turnout for the non-radio portion. I’d like to believe that it was the transmission of RF radiation that drew hams from as far south as Stamford and as far north as Waterbury to our Comm Center. We had a total of 16 people visit us during WFD, and we were treated to Rachel’s delicious chili dinner and quiche breakfast. The topics of conversation were varied, and we also got to enjoy many delicious desserts, as well as endless pots of coffee. I would like to thank those of you who assisted in the clean up on Sunday morning. Your ability to make the center spick and span again was greatly appreciated by those of us rendered too sleepy from operating through the night to do it as efficiently ourselves. Sad you missed out? Come out to the Comm Center during the week on Monday and Thursday nights, plus Saturday mornings, for miniature re-enactments of this great event. Sure, they’re not contests, but DX, friends, and good coffee are always fun too.
